Dr. Lester Grinspoon, an internationally renowned cannabis expert who assisted in efforts to legalize medical cannabis in Rhode Island in the early 2000s, died yesterday at age 92.
Dr. Grinspoon was a respected psychiatrist and educator at the Harvard University School of Medicine who wrote the 1971 best-seller “Marihuana Reconsidered,” that focused on the safety and efficacy of the drug and propelled him to the forefront of the legalization efforts. He went on to spend the next 50 years writing, speaking and testifying as an expert on the topic, becoming one of the leading advocates for legalizing medical marijuana and adult use of cannabis.
His family’s personal experience with the use of cannabis to treat their teenage son’s nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy treatments for their teenage son’s fatal case of leukemia led to his advocacy for the use of medical marijuana and publication of another of his books, “Marijuana: The Forbidden Medicine” in 1993, which is credited with California passing first-in-the-nation legislation to legalize the use of medical cannabis in 1996.
Dr. Grinspoon also assisted in RI’s efforts to legalize medical cannabis. Together with his colleague, Dr. David Lewis from Brown University, helped further the understanding among policymakers of the clinical argument for legalizing this medicine.
